Teaching young people - especially school drop-outs and teenage orphans - how to become successful entrepreneurs is a passion for Southern Cross University (SCU) graduate Dr Chiang Guan Siang. Dr Chiang, who graduated with his Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) from SCU in 2000 and 2005 respectively, established his first educational business in Singapore way back in 1993. After receiving his MBA with a specialisation in entrepreneurship, he established his second business, Novelty Youth Ventures Pty Ltd, in 2003. The business specialises in the development of youth entrepreneurship in organisations as diverse as primary and secondary schools, pre-universities, junior colleges and children’s homes. Dr Chiang praised the training he had received through SCU’s entrepreneurship program, a first in Singapore. “Through my studies with SCU, I have acquired much knowledge about the complex issues of entrepreneurship which I can now share with the young people I am mentoring,” he said. “Entrepreneurship and innovation have become the buzz words of the day and SCU’s program is a leader in its field. ” Dr Chiang’s unique youth entrepreneurship course targets young people aged 10 to 18 who participate in a 22-hour rigorous training and preparation program. In past years, the course culminated in an annual expo and competition which involved some 13 Singapore schools and three charitable organisations for the inaugural event in 2003. For one expo SCU’s Singapore alumni chapter focused on the ‘student dropouts’ – students who had left school early - coaching and mentoring them on how to set themselves up in business and then showcasing the results.
