Our Recreation Centre’s atrium entrance will centralize and pull together the entire complex. As you approach, the day’s problems slip away and you enter a welcoming landscaped courtyard. Your eyes are drawn up towards the centre’s primary public art display, created by Vancouver artists Brian Baxter and Markian Olynk. The artwork’s series of full window height bent glass ‘fins’ stylize movement as in the ‘search for the perfect form’…something that is common to all sports. The sliding glass doors create a seamless space from the exterior courtyard into the lobby. Once inside, you are greeted by stunning structural glasswork, inviting ambient light and welcoming, comfortable furniture. Designed as the heartbeat of the facility, the atrium provides access to all areas of the building. With clear sight lines into the gymnasium, the spinning studio, and towards the fitness centre, users can view the facility quickly while only steps away from the child care facilities, change rooms and elevator. The ice and curling centres are visible from the lobby while the entrance lends itself seamlessly to facilitating receptions, exhibits or special events. The city will work with the sponsor to incorporate recognition in a prominent location such as the facility’s reception desk.
