Assyrian Life: A blog about all things Assyrian!

Assyrian Life: A blog about all things Assyrian! Kosovo and The New Precedent It Sets Posted in February 19th, 2008 by TheAssyrian in ALL, Current News Two days ago, (FEB 17, 2008) Kosovo, a landlocked region located in the Balkans declared independence from Serbia. I will not state if I agree or disagree with their declaration, however, I do see more trouble brewing and something more significant. It cannot be denied that this announcement has set a new geo-political precedent, as countries with their own insurgencies and independence movements (some arguably more legitimate then Kosovo’s) will strive to repeat and point out the Kosovo model in their own struggle. Now, not all nations have recognized the Kosovars declaration of independence, and within the ones that have, you will notice the following. The majority of those who have accepted Kosovo as the world’s newest state have been keen to stress its uniqueness, citing its history, a near decade under international administration and its status as the final part to break away from former Yugoslavia. So why do they have to impress its uniqueness on us. Western Powers speak in double talk and rhetoric, for fear of other regions wanting to break away form their respective masters via the Kosovo model. This declaration of independence gives hope and sets precedence to other independence movements, and one might begin to question “Why can Kosovo be allowed to break away, but not others? ” Why are US and other Western powers are happy to recognize Kosovo, but not the territorial rights and/or right of self determination of other minorities? Such as, Chechnya, Tibet, the Kurds, the Assyrians, the disputed slivers of former Soviet republics to the remote rebel enclaves in Asia or Africa.

assyria - Easton's Bible Dictionary

assyria - Easton's Bible Dictionary Assyria: The name derived from the city Asshur on the Tigris, the original capital of the country, was originally a colony from Babylonia, and was ruled by viceroys from that kingdom. It was a mountainous region lying to the north of Babylonia, extending along the Tigris as far as to the high mountain range of Armenia, the Gordiaean or Carduchian mountains. It was founded in B. C. 1700 under Bel-kap-kapu, and became an independent and a conquering power, and shook off the yoke of its Babylonian masters. It subdued the whole of Northern Asia. The Assyrians were Semites ( Genesis 10:22 ) but in process of time non-Semite tribes mingled with the inhabitants. They were a military people, the "Romans of the East." Of the early history of the kingdom of Assyria little is positively known. In B. C. 1120 Tiglath-pileser I. , the greatest of the Assyrian kings, "crossed the Euphrates, defeated the kings of the Hittites, captured the city of Carchemish, and advanced as far as the shores of the Mediterranean." He may be regarded as the founder of the first Assyrian empire. After this the Assyrians gradually extended their power, subjugating the states of Northern Syria.
