Types of Central Heating Boilers Todays boilers are not only smaller, neater, and so take up less space, but they are more energy efficient and use less fuel to produce the same amount of heat. Replacing a 15 year old boiler with a modern highly efficient model, could save you upto 30% on your existing fuel bills. There are four main types of modern boilers using gas, LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) or oil: Conventional Boilers Conventional boilers are generally used in conjunction with a hot water cylinder and roof tanks and radiators. Available for oil or gas, floor standing or wall mounted with a large range of flueing options. External oil fired conventional boilers are also available. Condensing Boilers By converting approximately 88% of fuel into heat compared to 72%+ for a new conventional boiler, the condensing boiler is the most efficient of them all, wasting the least energy. Condensing boilers are available as both conventional or combination units. A conventional boiler burns fuel in a combustion chamber surrounded by a water jacket. This heats the water, which is then circulated around the heating system. Unfortunately, much of the heat produced by the burning of the fuel is either lost to the surrounding air or disappears up the flue.

The American Artist in Connecticut: The Legacy of the Hartford Steam Boiler Collection
The Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company The Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company is a global provider of specialty insurance products, inspection services and engineering consulting. Its roots as a Connecticut corporation date to the 1850s when a group of Hartford engineers expressed concern at the disastrous consequences of steam boiler explosions, a frequent occurrence of that day. In the wake of the 1865 explosion of the Mississippi River steamer Sultana, the worst boiler explosion in American history with a loss of 1,238 lives, they formed a company that would both inspect and insure steam boilers. Founded in 1866, Hartford Steam Boiler is one of the pioneering American businesses devoted to industrial safety. As the company grew and matured, it became recognized for supporting industrial innovation through insurance and the application of new technologies. Today, as an independently managed subsidiary of American International Group (AIG), Hartford Steam Boiler is one of the largest equipment breakdown insurers in the world. Among its more recent innovations has been the formation of collections of American paintings and furniture. Wilson Wilde, the companys President and CEO from 1971 to 1994, formulated a plan for preserving Connecticuts heritage by collecting the works of Connecticut artists and artisans. Over a fifteen-year period, Hartford Steam Boiler acquired 70 pieces of furniture and 190 works of art, diversely representative of America, but unified by their association with Connecticut. In 2001, Hartford Steam Boiler announced that it would donate its entire American art collection to the Florence Griswold Museum.

Boilers: Steaming Small Rosemary Thornton, contributing editor Bigger isn't always better, especially when comparing the soot-belching, fire-breathing behemoth boilers of the past to newer, more efficient (and smaller) models. This high efficiency oil-fired steam boiler has an average AFUE (annual fuel utilization) rating of 85% or more and is offered in eight sizes ranging from 75,000 to 275,000 BTUs. It can be vented vertically or horizontally with a vent on back or top. The hinged burner door swings out of the way for easy inspection of the cast-iron boiler. An optional extra is the high capacity tankless heater which provides hot water year round, even when steam heat is not being produced. The boiler carries a ten-year limited warranty.
