It's not easy to make a movie that's as much a history of the CIA as a drama. Those more used to the spy thrillers of John le Carré might well flinch. Perhaps that's why Robert De Niro has cast his long film with so many of Hollywood's name players, including himself. Those unengaged by the plot can amuse themselves by playing spot the cameo. But though the movie has its damp patches and, in the words of one American critic, is all cloak and very little dagger, De Niro has to be commended for a thoroughly professional job. His film intrigues for most of its 165 minutes, taking its title from the biblical quotation: "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep." We start with the Bay of Pigs debacle in the early Sixties. Matt Damon's Edward Wilson reports on the leakage of secrets during the abortive invasion of Cuba to William Hurt's high-up, who has, in turn, to report back to President Kennedy. The rest of the story is told largely in flashback.
